Preventing White Spots While Wearing Braces

Braces do an amazing job of straightening teeth, but without proper care, they can also leave behind unwanted white spots. These small, chalky marks are common during orthodontic treatment and form when plaque builds up around brackets. The good news is that with the right habits, white spots are preventable.

What Causes White Spots?

White spots are areas of demineralization on the tooth’s surface. They occur when bacteria in plaque feed on sugars and produce acids that wear away enamel. Because braces create extra places for food and plaque to hide, these spots often form around brackets and along the gumline. If not addressed, they can become permanent and affect both the health and appearance of your smile. Stick to the following tips to help prevent white spots!

Brush and Floss Regularly

Brush after every meal using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
Angle the brush around brackets and wires to reach all surfaces.
Floss once a day using floss threaders or orthodontic floss to remove plaque between teeth.

Use Fluoride Products

Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps reverse early signs of demineralization. Ask us about fluoride rinses or gels that add an extra layer of protection.

Watch What You Eat and Drink

Sugary and acidic foods feed the bacteria that cause white spots. Try to limit soda, sports drinks, sticky candy, and frequent snacking. Choose water, dairy, fruits, and vegetables instead.

Keep Up with Appointments

Regular orthodontic visits allow us to monitor your progress and catch any early warning signs of white spots. Your dentist will also play an important role in maintaining strong enamel through cleanings and preventive care.
